Background & History
What's Your Tree was developed during year-long inquiry sparked by a major motion picture based on the story of Julia Butterfly Hill. This film, LUNA, is in active development and has the potential to be a film that millions of people see all over the world. The possibility of the film had us ask: What is it that takes someone from inspiration into action over the long haul? When someone is inspired by a film, what would keep them involved and active in the world?
The answer to these questions became our obsession! It took us on a journey that has included learning from the top megachurches in the US, top online businesses, political and social organizing groups, all of which have provided the foundation for an adaptive best practices model for civic engagement that What's Your Tree and its sister programs use to achieve our community building goals.
What's Your Tree was originally created for people who are inspired by Julia’s story, but reaches far beyond Julia's "fans". It provides a way for people to “find their own tree” and build small groups and social networks in their community at the same time.
When the LUNA film is released widely, we will use What's Your Tree as a way to support inspired movie viewers in taking steps towards long term engagement in their communities and in the world.
